Zev leaned over a glass display of sparkling rings, sweeping a critical eye over the entire collection. Other similar displays occupied the space around him, filled with all manner of jewelry and watches—primarily for women, but a few for men as well. [break][break]

But the rings in particular had captured his attention. They were his reason for visiting that jewelry store in Lilycove's infamous department store. Though, if none of them passed his criteria, there were always other stores. [break][break]

Of course, he was not walking around in broad daylight with his normal face. Instead, his Zoroark's illusion disguised him as Jason Kellner, an Unovan transplant and owner of a small security company. [break][break]

Blonde hair replaced black, and hazel eyes replaced blue. Even the shape of his face had changed, completing the disguise. Even his Pokémon had taken on a new form, appearing as an Obstagoon instead. [break][break]

Zev looked over at Nenet, his companion for the shopping trip. "Do you see any you like?" he asked, slipping an arm around her waist. "Remember, money's not an issue."

Nenet doesn't lean against Zev, though she does allow his arm to slip around her waist as they stand side by side, staring at rings together. Her lips quirk into a vague smile at his reminder - how could she forget? Still, it was odd having no price point to wrangle with. She made good enough money, though it was nothing compared to what Zev earned and hid away.

To think he was indulging her like this. It was almost unbelievable.

As Nenet browses, her fingertips trailing over the glass counter until she taps above a white gold ring, its gemstone a pale agate with mossy inclusions. "I think yellow gold would look better," she muses aloud. As she speaks she glances downwards, the Rockruff leaning against her ankle being surprisingly good for the outing once a few well-placed scratches from Zev convinced him to behave.

"Something like this?" She taps a simple yellow gold ring with diamond clusters as its setting, her gaze casting upwards to 'Jason' as she speaks.

Zev's eyes followed the movement of Nenet's fingers as they lingered over a couple of different rings. The first one looked well-made, but its beauty paled in comparison to his wife's. "I agree," he said, nodding his head. "The yellow gold looks better." [break][break]

A whine from their feet reminded him of the Rockruff accompanying them that day. Crouching, he scooped up the Pokémon in his arms and held him over the glass display. [break][break]

"What do you think, Apollo?" he asked playfully. "Do you like that gold one with all the diamonds for your mom?" Technically, Nenet was the puppy's "grandmother," but calling the woman that was too weird even for Zev. [break][break]

Feeling left out, his Zoroark-turned-Obstagoon shuffled closer for a look for herself. [break][break]

A saleswoman approached, drawn by the curious group hovering over the rings. "Can I help you with anything?" she asked.

Nenet stills imperceptibly, her expression off for less than a second as the word 'mom' washes over her. She shoves the imagery out of her mind - she wasn't any little girl's mother and she didn't miss said little girl.

"We won't be calling you daddy," is her low, playful reply before her attention shifts to the saleswoman hovering far enough away to be polite.

With a warm smile, she taps above the diamond cluster ring and says, her voice rising from the whisper it was to Zev, "I'd like to try this one." The woman - her name tag emblazoned with Rika - hops over swiftly and with a wide smile as she opens the case and chatters about the rings.

Carefully taking the jewellery from its display as it's offered, Nenet slips on the ring and holds out her had. It all feels surreal, but here she is in the middle of a jewellery store with Zev buying a wedding ring over a year after the fact.

"What do you think," she asks the blonde man beside her while the saleswoman coos over them being a 'cute couple'.

Zev suppressed a grimace at the thought of being called any fatherly moniker, let alone daddy. Instead, he chuckled softly, the Rockruff still cradled in his arms. Both Pokémon made hushed sounds of awe as Nenet displayed the wedding ring on her slender finger. [break][break]

"It suits you," the man said, a smile spreading across his face. Earlier, he'd practiced capturing a precise expression of mixed pleasure and pride in front of the mirror. He deployed it now. [break][break]

Turning to the saleswoman, he informed her, "Can I see your selection of men's rings?" [break][break]

She shuffled them down the glass case to the end, where men's wedding bands sat gleaming under brilliant light. Zev carried the Rockruff with him while his fake Obstagoon remained dutifully at his side. [break][break]

Scanning the choices on display, he asked Nenet, "Should I get yellow gold to match yours? I'm thinking a simple design is better. That way, it'll be easier to find a silicone ring similar to it." [break][break]

They had agreed he'd purchase two: a metal one to wear at home and for special occasions, and an inexpensive silicone one to wear to work. He could easily replace the latter if it broke, got damaged, or was lost.

Nenet smiled softly, her admiration for the ring clear before her attention turns to the selection of men's rings offered. Her head tilts faintly in Zev's direction as he speaks, her expression thoughtful, before she muses, "I think whichever looks best. We don't need to match."

"What colour would you prefer?"

She leans over the case to examine the rings on display, her finger lightly tapping one of the rings with a black matte finish resembling metal. "This is nice," she murmurs, her eyes continuing to scan the selection of rings.

Apollo's gaze trails after Nenet as she moves, his little eyes wide and fascinated with the ring now adorning Nenet's hand. Waiting for her to pause, he leans himself as far as he can out of Zev's grasp and gives a little yip until garnering the woman's attention. Refusing to let himself be pet, instead he snuffs heartily at the stones as she holds her hand near, seemingly fascinated until his ill-advised attempt at licking the ring revokes his peering privileges.

"We don't offer any silicone jewelry here, if that's what you're looking for," said the saleswoman who was still hovering nearby. [break][break]

A slight tension in her smile suggested she'd taken offense to the idea that her higher-end jewelry store offered such inexpensive wares. "Our dark gray and medium black rings come in stainless steel and tungsten." [break][break]

Zev's eyes paused on the matte black wedding band. Its lack of sheen reminded him of his own armor, the dark crystals he could summon at will from his body. "It does look nice," he agreed. [break][break]

Apollo squirmed in his arms, licking at Nenet's fingers. The small dog's excited movements were proving too much of a distraction for the task at hand. With a light shake of his head, Zev handed the Pokémon to his wife. "Here, you hold onto him." [break][break]

Then he addressed the saleswoman, unbothered by her forced politeness. "Between stainless steel and tungsten, which one is more scratch-resistance? I'm very hands-on at work." [break][break]

"In that case, you'll want tungsten," the saleswoman replied, removing a ring from the display case and handing it to Zev. [break][break]

He slipped it onto his left ring finger and examined it in the light. "I like it. It has a good feel to it," he said, clenching his hand into a fist. The weight of the ring was unfamiliar, but he would get used to it with time. [break][break]

Turning to Nenet once more, Zev showed her his hand. "Well?"

Listening intently to the saleswoman, but soon laughs as she finds a too-interested Rockruff deposited in her arms. "You're being a menace," she murmurs lowly to the Pokemon, who seems equal parts chastised and unaffected.

Her lips purse as the ring is pulled from the case and slipped onto Zev's hand; shuffling Apollo in her arms, she moves her now-free hand to lightly take Zev's into her own to examine the ring now upon his finger.

The jewellery glitters darkly as it catches the light, its polished surface reminding her of the black crystals often found littering Zev's skin. "I like it," she answers, her gaze levelling with Zev's as she smiles.

"We should get this one."

Much to her chagrin, Apollo attempts once more to lean forward, but his attention now seems focused on the dark band adoring Zev's finger.

Zev's pleased smile matched Nenet's. His fingers curled into the Rockruff's fur, scratching the Pokémon behind the ears, before withdrawing. [break][break]

"We'll get these, then," he said to the saleswoman, who took back their new rings to put into velvet-lined boxes. She rang them up at the cash register. The price was what Zev expected; he did not wince as he took out his card to pay for them. [break][break]

"Congratulations on your upcoming marriage," she said, beaming about the purchase. [break][break]

Zev suppressed a noise of amusement as he accepted the fancy paper bag containing their purchases. As they left the store, he slipped his free arm around Nenet's waist again, pulling her flush against his side. His disguised Zoroark kept pace along his other side. [break][break]

"What do you say we get lunch on the way home?" the man offered.
